The 11Alive Community 2005 Service Award

The 11Alive Community 2005 Service Award

Recognized as an outstanding local volunteer who has demonstrated selfless devotion for the betterment of her community, Robin Ferst Howser, Founder & Chair of Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy, has been chosen as a 2005 recipient of the 2005 11Alive Community Service Award.

Originating her literacy efforts in her very own neighborhood of Morgan County, Robin has since expanded her definition of “community” to include the entire state of Georgia. Under her tutelage, the Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy now serves children under the age of 5 in the following communities: Butts, Calhoun, Carroll, Catoosa, Dade, Effingham, Greene, Hancock, Hart, Jasper, Meriwether, Morgan, Newton, Putnam, Seminole, Taliaferro, Walker, and Washington Counties as well as the residents of the John Hope Elementary School district in Atlanta, and G.O Bailey Elementary School district in Tift County.

However her vision does not stop here! There are approximately 600,000 children under the age of 5 in Georgia and Robin is striving to send a personal library of books and literacy support services to each and every one because she knows that “Children who Read, Succeed! “

This year will mark the 30th anniversary of this prestigious award and Robin will be formally honored at the 11Alive Community Service Awards evening on April 11, 2005. News Anchors Brenda Wood and Wes Sarginson will host the live, prime time telecast which is scheduled to be aired on WXIA the following Saturday evening.

Jane Fonda and Paula Rosput Reynolds are Co-chairs of the 2005 11Alive Community Service Awards. The program will benefit the organization founded by Ms. Fonda ten years ago, The Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention (G-CAPP).

The Traditional Home Magazine 2005 Classic Woman Award

We all know her. She’s the one who always thinks of someone else before she thinks of herself. And she doesn’t just think – she acts, tirelessly giving her time and her energies to make life better for those in her community who are less fortunate. Now it’s time for us to give back to her.

Robin Ferst Howser is such a woman, one who is making a positive difference in her community – through the formation of the Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy and her volunteer work through this special early literacy initiative.

Recognizing Robin as an incredible woman with her commitment and level of volunteerism placing her at the top of the nomination list, she has been chosen as one of 6 recipients in the nation to be awarded the Traditional Home 2005 Classic Woman.

Celebrating the spirit of her volunteerism, Robin will be featured in the November 2005 issue of Traditional Home magazine.

Robin Ferst Howser, Founder of The Ferst Foundation chosen as one of 15 recipients of the Speaking with an Active Voice grant.

Congratulations to the 15 winners of the Speaking With an Active Voice Grant Program!

The program celebrates and recognizes women, ages 45-55, who refuse to let mid-life slow them down and who actively choose to enhance their lives and the lives of those around them.

Today's baby-boomer woman is more active and involved in her own health and well-being as well as with activities in the workplace and community.

"Women can't afford to be slowed down during mid-life," says Dr. Susan Fox, an internist and a member of the American Medical Women's Association (AMWA).

Applications were considered for projects in a number of areas, including education and lifelong learning, visual arts, literacy arts, performing arts, business, medicine, civic and neighborhood programs, advancement of women's health, and government. Applicants were not required to be on HRT to be selected for a grant.

More than 1,100 grant applications were submitted.

The applications were evaluated by a panel of six judges: three representives each from AMWA and Pharmacia Corporation.

The winners were announced nationally on October 18, International Menopause Day. Each of the 15 winners received a grant of $6,500 to help execute her project.

Official spokesperson Meredith Baxter was on hand to announce the winners. Meredith is a prime example of an intelligent, independent woman who has continued to live an active, productive life after entering mid-life. She is a champion of women's rights and has spoken out on several women's health issues in the past few years. Educating women about menopause and the Speaking With an Active Voice Program is a natural extension of her effrots to help women manage their own healthcare and well-being.

"These extraordinary women embody the spirit of modern women in mid-life," says Meredith Baxter.
